The Midnight Spell Release Day!!

I'm so excited that today is the official release date for THE MIDNIGHT SPELL! My co-author, Kody Boye, and I had such a great time creating the world and characters that inhabit the novel. We're thrilled to finally be able to share it with you.

This novel was a departure for both me and Kody. It's a paranormal young adult novel about two best friends dealing with their normal teenage lives when a terrible evil invades their small town. The story is rich in humor, but also has some more terrifying moments.

We're hoping that you will enjoy our foray in to the YA genre and look forward to your feedback.

The Midnight Spell Blog Tour is already underway  with reviews, interviews, guest blogs, excerpts, and giveaways. Make sure to check it out at Xpresso Tours.

Praise for THE MIDNIGHT SPELL

This story captured me right from the start. I was invested in the characters and interested in where the story was going. It was funny, scary, and had some great action. – Amy, Book Loving Mom

This story can be enjoyed by anyone fifteen or older. Boy, girl, teen, adult, it doesn’t matter. The story really has something for everyone. Personally, I’d like to see a continuation of the story, friendships, and the cat and broom too. – Diayll, MotherGamerWriter

Fresh, clever and full of unforgettable characters and a few surprises, The Midnight Spell is a must for fans of paranormal YA. It’s familiar enough to please the die-hard fans, but different enough to please those who have grown weary of the cliché’s.O’Dell, Book Twirps

I loved the characters and would love to see them again in the future. I was on the edge of my seat pondering what would happen next and kept guessing throughout the book. In short, I was kept utterly spellbound by the magic in these pages. – Wendy, At Random

I adored this book. The minute that I met Christy and Adam, I wanted to be the third wheel. I adored their personalities, and more importantly, their mutual love and support.  All of the characters leapt off the pages and into my life. They were SO engaging and entertaining, that I found myself wanting to read the book at any free moment just so I could be in their presence. –Ash, Smash Attack Reads

Cover Reveal: J.L. Bryan's Fairyvision!

One of my favorite writers is the amazing J. L. Bryan. I discovered him when I downloaded JENNY POX for free and devoured the book in great big reading gulps. Since then I've read the entire JENNY POX series and his science fiction novel HELIX.  He's a great horror writer and his sci-fi was pretty damn cool, too.

Therefore, when I found out he was writing a YA fairy series I wasn't too sure what to think. At first I wasn't too interested in the series, but eventually my curiosity got the best of me. I finally downloaded FAIRY METAL THUNDER and instantly fell desperately in love with this amazing series. It's witty and fun and has just enough moments of scariness to keep this horror writer happy.

The fifth book in the series, FAIRYVISION,  is about to come out (and he let me read it already), and I definitely want to encourage everyone to snap up the series. The first book, FAIRY METAL THUNDER, is FREE (and so is JENNY POX) and a great read. If you haven't started reading this series yet, you need to right away.

I am so happy to be a part of the cover reveal for J.L. Bryan's latest entry into his Songs of Magic series.

So without further ado, here is the beautiful cover by Claudia McKinney of Phat Puppy Art.

Fairyvision (Songs of Magic #5) by JL Bryan
Expected Pub: February 2013 by J.L. Bryan

Jason, Erin, and the other Zebras go on a world tour with their enchanted instruments, only to encounter the mysterious supernatural Folk of India and the Far East.  While they tangle with their record company, Erin tries to avoid dealing with the secrets she's learned about herself.

In Faerie, Aoide the Lutist and her troupe finally return home from their long adventure.  They're struggling to get new gigs, but Aoide senses opportunity in the form of special new magic mirrors that can broadcast concerts, plays, and other entertainment all over Faerie...

Cover Updates
March 13, 2013 in Poland

You may have missed my previous post with the announcement, but Poland has opted to keep the Tor artwork for the Polish editions of AS THE WORLD DIES. I really, really love the typography they did on the covers. It gives it a whole new look and it's very eye catching.

March 18, 2013 in Denmark

The Danish version of THE FIRST DAYS had a new look as well. They've altered it from the very golden hue it originally had to a more grayish palette  I like both versions, but I think the gray/blue makes it a bit more morbid and attractive.

My fabulous husband finished the back covers for two up coming releases.  My hubby studied graphic design but burned out on it for a long time. Recently, he jumped back into design work.  He's the one who lays out my bookmarks, postcards, and creates the back covers for my most recent books.

Here are his latest triumphs.

Release date February 28, 2013- Worldwide

Release date March 15, 2013- Worldwide

I'm so happy to have him fully back in the mix. He's also planning on doing the covers for my upcoming serial. Which brings me to...

New Rhiannon Frater Serial Announced
I've been toying with the idea of doing a serial for some time now. After reading an article posted by author Susan Kaye Quinn about converting a full length manuscript into a serial, I realized I already had the perfect opportunity to serialize something I've already written.

A very long time ago I wrote a modern gothic vampire epic called IN DARKNESS WE MUST ABIDE.  I loved the story (and still do), but it met with rejection when I tried to sub it. Of course, I subbed it entirely wrong since I lived in the middle of nowhere, Texas and had very outdated information at our local library. I was immediately discouraged after the first round of rejections and shelved the book.

Well, I went back to the story, looked it over, and realized that with a little tweaking, the story will make a great serial. It's a massive epic with a dynamic cast, old school vampires, blood, gore, unrequited love, a charismatic lead, a smoldering love interest, and terrifying bad guy.

The first installment is already with the test readers and my hubby (yay!) will be doing the covers. The first installment will be free, with following installments coming in at .99.  The installments will be between 10,000 to 15,000 words each. When the serial is finished, we'll release the entire series in a paperback omnibus.

I will be announcing the release date of IN DARKNESS WE MUST ABIDE: Episode One -Evil Comes Home in the next few weeks.

Happy Valentine's Day, My Darling Fans-A Gift For You

Excerpt from AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES VOLUME 3
Rune's Story: The Back Roads of Zombie Hell

“Dad.”
Inside the small tent pitched on the hard-baked Texas soil, Rune snorted in his sleep, rolled over on his sleeping bag, and mumbled incoherently.
“Dad!”
Through the remains of his liquor stupor, Rune heard a familiar voice, but sleep had a vice grip on his throbbing brain. He twitched slight, but kept on snoring.
“Dad! Wake up!”
Lurching upright, Rune groaned and clutched his head as the dim interior of his small tent swung around him crazily before settling back down. “Fuck me.”
“Dad, no swearing in front of Braden.”
Blinking against the harsh sunlight pouring through the open flap into the ten to form a hot triangle of light near his feet, Rune tried to find his balance and sort out his jumbled thoughts.
“Dad, over here.”
The contrast between the bright sunlight outside and the gloom inside the tent made it difficult to see. His face was both sunburned and wind burned, so it hurt when he cupped his hands over his eyes trying to see into the dim corner of his tent where a shadow form hunkered.
“Lainey?” Rune whispered, recognizing the figure. His stomach dropped and the sorrow he felt in that moment was overwhelming. “No, baby, no!”
Crouched in the corner of the tent in the shadows, his daughter held Rune's two year old grandson in her arms gently rocking him. Miles from civilization, camped out off Interstate 10 on private property, Rune knew there was no way in hell his daughter Lainey could have found him. It could only mean one thing.
“How?” Rune shouted, anger and despair filling him. “How?”
“Dad, it's okay. It's over now,” Lainey said in a soft voice.
It meant to calm him, but somehow it made him angrier. “Was it my no good son-in-law? I knew something was wrong with that boy! I don't care if he was a military man. He was no good! You never should have married him!” Rune wiped at the tears flowing down his cheeks. “I knew it!”
“Dad, please listen to me.”
“Oh, my baby, my baby,” Rune wailed, his icy breath puffing into the morning light. It was growing steadily colder in the tent as the spirit of his daughter sucked the energy from the air to manifest herself.
Lainey gently rocked Braden as he sat on her lap sucking his thumb watching Rune with wide blue eyes. “Dad, please. I don't have much time. You know that. You're wasting it.”
“Okay, okay,” Rune whispered miserably. He knew she was right, but it was so hard to contain his sorrow. Throughout his life he had encountered the spirits of the dead seeking peace before moving on to the next world. They were limited in their abilities and he understood how much effort his daughter had to be exerting to appear to him. Yet, the pain her presence caused him was almost unbearable. “Okay, baby, talk to me.”
Smoothing Braden’s hair, Lainey spoke, yet her lips did not move. “The world is dying, Dad. Something has gone wrong.”
“Nukes?” Rune had grown up in the Cold War. Lainey and her husband lived in San Antonio near Lackland Air Force Base. It would be one of the primary targets of a strike.
“No, Dad. Something...worse. The dead have come back, Dad. They've come back to...kill us.”
“What?” Rune pressed one hand to his forehead. “What?”
“Just like the movies, Dad, the dead are coming back to eat us.”
“No, no, no. This is a nightmare. You're not here and I'm dreaming some stupid ass dream because I went to that zombie store in Vegas.”
“Dad, it's real! Listen to me! Please!”
Lifting his swollen tear-filled eyes, Rune nodded slowly despite the desire to deny everything she was saying. He had to keep focused and allow her to speak, for her sake and his own. “Okay, Lainey. I'm listening.”
“Dad, San Antonio is lost. It's chaos there. Ben dropped us off at the hospital before he left with his unit so I could wait for mom to finish with her rounds. It was guarded and should have been safe, but they brought all the people who were bitten there. The hospital was overrun almost immediately.” The edges of Lainey's form began to blur. “We tried to hide, but...”
Now that Rune’s eyesight had adjusted to the gloom, he see the horrible wounds inflicted on both his daughter and grandson. Moaning with grief, he crawled toward them, but already their images was wavering and beginning to fade.
“Don't come to San Antonio trying to save us,” Lainey said. This time her lips moved and he could see her teeth through a gruesome tear in her cheek. “We're all gone. Me, mom, and...” Lainey pressed her lips to Braden’s hair.
“Baby, I don't understand. This can't be real,” Rune protested.
“But it is. Right now the whole world is dying. It's everywhere. Soon there will be only a fraction of humanity left alive.”
“Sweet Jesus,” Rune whispered.
“You can't die, Dad. You're important in this new world of the dead. You have to stay alive. You have to. Do you understand?”
Nodding, Rune reached out, his fingers hovering over his precious grandson.
“I can't hold on any longer,” Lainey said sorrowfully. “We need to move on.”
“Papa,” Braden said in a tremulous voice. “There are monsters.”
“I know, son. I know. But you're going to go where there are no monsters. Somewhere beautiful and full of fun things to do,” Rune whispered. His emotions were choking him and he could barely talk. “You hold onto your mama and she's going to take you into the light. Okay?”
Braden nodded, sucking on his thumb.
“That's my brave boy,” Rune sobbed.
“Dad,” Lacey whispered as she dissolved into the gloom in the tent. “I love you. Stay out of San Antonio. Stay alive.”
Covering his face, Rune wept in despair and anger.

Beautiful Creatures- Early Film Review

Since the beginning of the year I have discovered the adventure of early screenings. It all started with someone handing me passes to Warm Bodies, and the discovery of a whole new world of early passes. Through one of my new acquaintances made while standing in line, I found out about a slew of websites that let you see where the latest showing in your area is taking place and how to sign up. So far Kody Boye and I have received passes for Mama and Beautiful Creatures. We have our fingers crossed for Oz.

The thing about early screenings is that you have to be there very early. The movie studios give out a lot more passes than available seats to make sure the theater is full. We arrived at 3:30 yesterday to find quite a few people already in line. You also have to wait a long time before you enter the theater. For Mama we were allowed to sit in the hall of the theater. Yesterday, we sat outside, but the weather was nice.

Epic Swag!!!
Close to showtime the local radio station supporting the event passed out some very nice swag.  I was thrilled to grab some stuff.  I just love the key chain and I already hung the poster in my office.  And aren't the bookmarks awesome?

Anyway, the line to get into this movie was huge by the time they started scanning our passes and marking our hands to allow us inside. There was full security on hand. After having my purse searched and having those security wands passed over me, I got to grab a great seat inside the theater. The theater was almost full when I hurried out to the ladies room and was shocked to see that there was still a massive line waiting/hoping to get into the theater. I have a feeling this movie might be really big if so many people showed up for the screening.

So what did I think about the film? First off, I haven't read the books. The first one is on my TO READ shelves, but I have yet to curl up with it yet.  Therefore, my viewing experience was based entirely on what I saw on the screen.

First off, this movie is beautiful to look at. I really captures the Southern Gothic feel that I was hoping it would aim for. The South is absolutely beautiful and the filmmaker captured it wonderfully.  I seriously loved the whole "experience" of the movie.

Alden Ehrenreich plays Ethan, our narrator and lead protagonist. He's not mind-meltingly handsome or even suave, but he's very likable in the role. His big grin and goofy persona were quite refreshing. I enjoyed Ethan's view on life and his passion for what he felt was right.  Also, his love of books and his dreams of a better life were something any person who grew up in a small town immediately can connect with.  I thought the actor did a great job in the role, but I never could buy him as a teenager. He just LOOKED too much like someone in their early twenties. I looked up his actual age and he's 23. I had to struggle a little to get past his appearance, but the actor was very good in the role.

Alice Anglert plays Lena and she was so great in the role. She has a classically beautiful face, and I often thought she looked like she could have stepped out of a painting. Lena is not exactly a likable character. She's abrasive, defensive, and prone to angry outbursts, but once Ethan is in her life she becomes much more likable as his presence softens her fears about her future. They had a wonderful chemistry together.

Their relationship felt very real and much more organic than the Twilight romance. Ethan isn't all that blown away by Lena being a Caster. He takes it as a part of her, and obviously loves her for who she is. They have a love of books that bonds them together and a quirky sense of humor that they share. I loved seeing them evolve as a couple and my heart was fully invested in them. The sacrifices they are both willing to make were heart-wrenchingly beautiful.

Also in the cast is the always awesome Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson. They're both great in their roles and I loved their interactions. Emma Thompson was just a little too scary as the religious zealot in town, Mrs. Lincoln, and Jeremy plays the reformed Caster, Macon.

I loved the complexity of Macon and I look forward to reading the book because I definitely want to know more about him. Maybe it's just because Jeremy Irons is one of the hottest older men of all time, but I was completely intrigued with his character.

As for Emma Thompson, is there nothing she can't do? She puts on an amazing performance in this movie. I don't want to spoil anything, but there were a few times where I couldn't decide at which point in the story she was actually scarier.  I just adore her ability to play just about any character under the sun. Honestly, her moments of religious zealotry were terrifyingly familiar.

I do think some people will be offended by the way religious people are portrayed in the movie, but the villains are all over the top. There is one lovely scene that takes place in a church where we see Ethan and Amma, his mother's best friend and his surrogate caretaker, taking comfort in a sermon. I rather liked that touch.

Speaking of Amma, Viola Davis is such a beautiful, charismatic, and wonderful actress. I loved her in this movie and I really wish she had been in it more. She felt like an under-utilized character, but Viola did a lot with what little she had.

If there is a sequel, I really hope she's in it a lot more. She was fabulous.

As for the "bad Caster" played by Emily Blunt, I can't say much about her except she had some really interesting clothes in the movie and cool contacts. There was one epic scene with her where she squares off against Lena, but otherwise her presence in the film was rather light.  She did have one important plot point in the story, but that could have been shucked off onto another character really easily. I'm not really sure what her character was in the story for other than to show us that Casters can go evil.

I really did enjoy seeing Lena struggle between the forces of Light and Darkness and the fear she has to live with. I also enjoyed her strength of character and her flaws. The love affair she has with Ethan was beautifully executed and I was very invested in it. At one point of the movie, my heart broke for both of them. (And Viola Davis DID make me cry when she realizes the sacrifice Lena has made. Wow. Her expression.)

This is an enjoyable film. It's not the best film ever. It doesn't rank up there with The Hunger Games, but it is decidedly better than Twilight. I loved the Southern Gothic atmosphere and the new take on witches (casters). I also liked the humor that was infused into the story along with the pathos. It's worth the time to catch this movie in the theater.

Cover Reveal-Polish Edition of THE FIRST DAYS!

I received all three wraparound covers of the trilogy the other day from my Polish publishing house Vesper and I absolutely love them.  The marketing department then sent this nifty 3d version to share with my fans.

I seriously love how Vesper used the artwork that Tor created for the series, but added a different flare with the typography. It just really pops out in my opinion.  My very own copy is on the way to my mailbox, so as soon as I get it I'm going to snap pictures and post it here.

I'm so happy that the Polish edition will be hitting the bookstores in Poland soon! March 13th is right around the corner!

Rhiannon Frater Books Available for Review

I am very grateful to the book bloggers who have reviewed my books in the past and have signed up for my cover reveals, blog tours, and blitzes. Every single one of the participants has helped spread the word about my novels and have alerted potential readers that they might want to take a look at my creations.

Most reviews for my books come out around the time of a book's release, but not all the bloggers interested in the released book end up on a blog tour. Since most of my e-arcs go out to participating bloggers, I recently realized I need to make sure that all reviewers know all my indie books are available for review including the upcoming releases PRETTY WHEN THEY COLLIDE and THE MIDNIGHT SPELL.

If you're a book blogger and interested in reviewing one or more of my books, please contact me at rhiannonfrater at gmail.com. I'll just need to know your blog URL and the books you're interested in.  All books are available in ebook formats (pdf, mobi, epub, lrf, palm).

PRETTY WHEN THEY COLLIDE and THE MIDNIGHT SPELL are available in UNEDITED eArc.

Weekly Wrap Up: Fighting To Survive and More

So...

*looks awkward*

Okay, this is the deal. Blogging when you're a writer is not always easy. Basically, writing the actual books gets in the way of blogging. Yet, blogging is a good way to keep fans abreast of what's happening in my writing career.  So it's been a bit of a quandary for me when I'm on a big writing spree, or heading toward a deadline, or just brain dead and have no idea what to post about.

Therefore, I have decided I will at the very least do a Weekly Wrap Up on Fridays. Even if I don't past at any other time during the week, at least you'll get a smidgen of an idea of what's up in my world.

So here is the first Weekly Wrap Up!

This Week's Book Release

Fighting to Survive came out in mass market paperback on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. It's available at your favorite online retailer or local bookstore (if you're in the US & Canada).

The difference between the mass market paperback and the trade paperback versions is the price and size. Since mass market paperbacks are a much smaller size they're cheaper.  The trade paperbacks will continue to be on sale, too, so you have a choice of which format you'd prefer.

SIEGE will be out on April 30, 2013, so you can have a full collection very shortly!

Release Dates Announced
THE MIDNIGHT SPELL will be released on February 28, 2013 and will have a week long blog tour.

PRETTY WHEN THE COLLIDE, the novella set in the PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES universe, will be released on March 15, 2013 and will have a cover reveal/release day blitz.

Both will have pre-order options for autographed copies. I'll keep you posted.

Writing Project Completed
PRETTY WHEN THEY COLLIDE is finished and with the final test reader. After I have her feedback, I'll revise and send the novella to my editor, Felicia Sullivan.  So far the feedback on the novella about Cass and Aimee (who appeared in PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS) has been very positive. I'm so excited.

Writing Project Started
AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES VOLUME 3 is coming together nicely. In this volume we'll have the stories of Rune, Senator Paige Brightman and a character who is vital to the future of the fort. The third story will actually go beyond SIEGE.  The cover art has been ordered. I have fingers crossed for an April release. I'll keep you updated.
